Evelyn L. (Brown) Mclean


Evelyn (Brown) McLean passed on July 15, 2017 in Hutchinson, Kansas after a short illness.  Evelyn was born February 14, 1917 at Centerview, Kansas.  She was the third child of Mathew Brown and Gladys Cramblet Brown.  She graduated from Centerview High School and then attended Emporia State Teacher’s College and received a teaching certificate.  Later in life she attended Sterling College and Fort Hays State where she received her Master’s Degree in Education.

After receiving her teaching degree at age 17, she taught in a one room school until she married William W. McLean on February 14, 1941in Cheney, Kansas.  She then lived on a farm near Lewis Kansas.  After raising two daughters, Brenda and Christina and a son Valis, she began teaching as a Reading Specialist in Macksville, Kansas until retirement in 1982.  After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed golfing in Arizona every winter and spending time with their extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband William; four brothers, Marion, Loren, Clinton and Merle; and 2 sisters, Dorothy and Eula.  She is survived by 2 daughters, Brenda McLean of Denver, Colorado, Christina McBride of Chickasha, Oklahoma and Valis McLean of Iola, Kansas; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The celebration of life will be held at the First Christian Church in Lewis, Kansas on July 22, 2017 at 10:30 AM with a graveside service at Wayne Cemetery in Lewis following the service.
In lieu of flowers,  donations may be sent to the Lewis EMT’s or the Kinsley Golf Course.
