Glen Roland Sommerfeld, 68, passed away January 18, 2024 in his home surrounded by family. He was born December 14, 1955, in Newton, Kansas, to George and Amy Sommerfeld. He was a graduate of Hesston High School, Class of 1973. On March 25, 1978, he married Marcella Oswald. She survives.
Glen was a farmer all his life, from growing up on a farm to most recently working at Janssen Farms. When Glen wasn't farming, he could be found refinishing furniture, doing yardwork, working on home remodel projects, or attending his grandson's events. He was also an avid reader, enjoying a wide genre of topics. His 2-year-old granddaughter also seems to share his love of books!
Family was very important to Glen. He loved nothing more than being with family at holiday gatherings and birthday parties, especially because food was always involved! Anytime with family was time well spent.
Glen was a man of faith. Growing up in a Christian home, he attended church his whole life and became a strong, godly, Christian man. He had a servant's heart and when help was needed, he never hesitated to lend a hand. Glen was a quiet man, and lived his life by example. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you had better listen because it was worth hearing.
He leaves behind wife, Marcy, Kinsley, Kansas; 2 children, Justin (Melisa) Sommerfeld, Moundridge, Kansas; Jill (Brett) Wiens, McPherson, Kansas; 3 grandchildren, Wyatt, Weston, and Jaycee Sommerfeld; 5 siblings, Janice Dyck, Moundridge, Kansas; Stan (Jan) Sommerfeld, Sharon Springs, Kansas; Lyle (Marj) Sommerfeld, Wichita, Kansas; Elva Sommerfeld, Hesston, Kansas; Jerry (Jeanne) Sommerfeld, Hesston, Kansas; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mark and Connie Oswald, Hutchinson, Kansas, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, Becky Sommerfeld.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life service will be held at Greensburg Mennonite Church in Greensburg, Kansas on Saturday, February 10 at 2:00pm. The service will be live streamed on Greensburg Mennonite Church's Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Prairie & Prairie Home Health, 200 Fourth Circle, Dodge City, KS, 67801.
