Long time Kinsley resident, Jennie Amaro, 93, was peacefully wrapped in God’s arms on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She was born June 20, 1927 to Roman and Josefa (Martinez) Gonzalez. She grew up as the second oldest of seven siblings and attended grade school in Granada, Colorado. After school, Jennie and her sister, Lola moved to Colorado Springs to attend college for nursing.
In 1946, Jennie met Reyes Amaro on a hot, summer day “uptown” on a sidewalk in Granada, Colorado. After their courtship, they married the next year on December 27, 1947 in Holly, Colorado at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church.
From there, they moved to start a family in Kinsley, Kansas where Reyes took a job. They had four children: Rozella, Carlos (deceased), Audrey and Orlando (deceased).
Jennie was dedicated to the Catholic faith and parish of Saint Nicholas, where she was apart of a sisterhood as a Daughter of Isabella. In 2019, Jennie received her 50 year honorary pin. For 22 years, she was a compassionate nurse aid at Edwards County Hospital in Kinsley, Kansas. She was a devoted wife married to Reyes for 61 years and kept him in line, making sure she would always have the last word. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of her life from her garden, to her grandchildren and their events to sewing, thrift store shopping, dancing and going ‘up town’ for an occasional margarita.
Jennie was always in the kitchen where you could always find a warm tortilla straight off the burner. She was very prideful over her garden but could never figure out why her strawberries wouldn’t bring her anything year after year. Her grandchild also never told her they were eating her strawberries straight of the vine. Jennie was a much respected Granny that took pride in her grandchild and led by example to live life to the fullest.
Other survivors include, daughters Rozella Trevizo and Audrey Steckline, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
