Kevin Gerard Brake

Kevin Gerard Brake of Kinsley, KS passed away at home on September 2, 2022.

Kevin was born on December 8, 1956, in Kinsley, KS. He was the son of Kenneth and Eleanoria (Peters) Brake, and the grandson of Anthony and Rose (Nosal) Brake and Edmund Peters Sr. and Eleanoria (Rupp) Peters. As a child, Kevin grew up in Kinsley, Hutchinson, Wichita, Kansas City, and Olathe, KS, as well as Laurel, MD. In 1975, he graduated from Laurel High School where he made his mark in Greco Roman wrestling. After completing 2 years at the University of Maryland, College Park, he returned to Kansas. After working for a variety of employers, Kevin settled in Kinsley to pursue his love of farming. For over 30 years, he farmed for distant cousin Mike Herrmann, and for his mother for the past 14 years.

Kevin was passionate about conservation farming techniques. He served on the Board of Supervisors for the Edwards County – Conservation District under the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

He had a love of history and was a lifelong learner. This led him to become a Wild West gunfight reenactor. He played the part of Caleb Coyote with the Santa Fe Trail Riders, the Pawnee County Vigilantes and the Kansas Prairie GunfighterS. Kevin loved to cook and was known for his lasagna, salmon mac & cheese, and cherry cheesecake. Golf was also an interest of his – he loved taking his grandkids golfing and participated in local golf tournaments.

Kevin is survived by his mother Eleanoria Brake of Laurel, MD; two children, Tim Brake (Charlotta McCallister) of Offerle, KS and Audrey Brake Lothman (Cody Lothman) of Pratt, KS; grandchildren: Arryck W. Boese, Drew K. Boese, Haley K. Boese, Annika Y. Brake, Jett Brake-Forshee, Skylar E. Brake, Landon Lothman, and Colt Lothman; one great-grandchild, Marcel G. Sandez; and three sisters, Vanesca Brake McDermott (Marc McDermott) of Glenn Dale, MD, Janet Brake of Laurel, MD, and Amy Phillips (Jeff Phillips) of St. Johns, FL.

Kevin is predeceased by his father Kenneth and brother-in-law Marc McDermott.
