Theresa Lucille (Hirsh) Rome was born on January 12, 1928 to Frank John and Josephine Caroline (Schmitt) Hirsh.
Her early years were spent on the family farm north of Kinsley in the St. Peter & Paul community. She attended St. Peter & Paul Grade School and St. Mary’s High School.
On August 26, 1946 she married Ameil J. Rome of Larned. They lived in a number of places, finally settling in Washington DC. AJ and Theresa enjoyed traveling extensively across the United States and Europe. AJ passed away July 25th 1979. Theresa worked as a secretary and executive assistant at various companies before finding her calling at American Chemical Society where she worked for 26 years, retiring as the Service Departments Editor.
Theresa had a strong faith and was very active in her parish in Washington DC. She was the first female lector at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. She volunteered at Anchor Mental Health Association, serving as their president in 1977.
Through her work in her parish, she became friends with Monsignor John Kuhn. She was a housekeeper and secretary for Monsignor for 40 years. They shared a love for cats and gardening. Their garden at Monsignor’s house was their pride & joy. After Monsignor’s death, she returned to Kansas to be near her family.
Theresa especially enjoyed going to morning mass during the time when the St. Nicholas School children participated. She played the piano and served as lector during her time at St. Nicholas Church.
In her later years, she especially enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends. She would always comment on what Frank would think of the crops while driving through the countryside.
She is survived by her sister Alfreda Licklider of Manitou Springs, CO, Paul Hirsh of Murrieta, CA, Christine Wright of Sedgwick, KS. She was proceeded in death by her parents, brothers, Victor, Don, Clarence and sister Mildred Conrardy.
